Emmy nominations announced

The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien has been nominated at this year’s Emmy Awards.

The now defunct NBC show is nominated for “Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series” against The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, Saturday Night Live and Real Time With Bill Maher.

Conan tweeted “Congrats to my staff on 4 Emmy nominations. This bodes well for the future of The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien”.

Jay Leno spoke about the nominations for The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien on his show this week, saying “the big show business news is that the Emmy nominations were announced today… the good news: The Tonight Show got four nominations! The bad news: I didn’t get one of them… remember there’s no ‘me’ in Emmy”.

Saturday Night Live is also nominated in the “Guest Actress in a Comedy Series” category for Betty White and Tina Fey’s appearances on the show.

Leno’s Tonight Show ratings fall

Ratings for The Tonight Show With Jay Leno have fallen to their lowest they’ve been since 1992.

Variety reports “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno won the 11:30 hour in the 18-49 demo and total audience, but auds dropped from 5 million in 2009 to 4 million total viewers, which is the lowest since 1992. A major reason for the decline was large viewership a year ago for a highly publicized Tonight Show episodes, including Leno’s final night, Conan O’Brien’s first night and an interview with President Obama”.

Fox News reports “Apparently Leno is not only getting equal-to-fewer viewers than the freakishly tall redhead, his show costs NBC $10-15 million more a year than O’Brien’s show did… Leno’s higher salary — $30 million per year, compared to O’Brien’s $15 million — plus the cost of his bigger production staff could even be pushing the show into the red, according to insiders”.

Conan writers special to air on TBS this weekend

Conan O’Brien’s writing team will appear on a TBS special. The standup special will be called Team Coco Presents Conan’s Writers Live and will air this weekend (Sunday at 10/9c). It will be a showcase for the writing talents of Conan’s team.

Conan won’t be appearing on the show himself though as he’s not allowed to appear on any TV shows until later this year, because of his exit deal with NBC (hence the name of his recent theatre tour – “Conan O’Brien presents The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour”).

Speaking about Conan O’Brien’s new talk show coming to TBS this November, Andy Richter has said “the network couldn’t have been more open to us and more inviting to us and more welcoming to us… it was pretty lousy what happened and it felt pretty lousy, but I really do think we’re going to end up in a better place and that’s already becoming evident”.

The name for Conan’s new talk show has not yet been confirmed.

Conan ready for new TBS show

Conan O’Brien says he’s ready for his new TBS talk show which premieres on the 8th November.

At a TBS/TNT programming presentation for advertisers in New York he said “I haven’t done any research, but my hunch is that 33-year-old males want to hear corny jokes and live country music… I can’t wait to get back to having fun on television… that’s all I want to do”. Conan said “I’m more of a man… my testosterone levels have tripled since I went through this experience”.
