Fallon made a name for himself on SNL but left in 2004 to pursue other ventures, including becoming the host of Late Night on NBC in 2009.

Jimmy will be hosting Saturday Night Live on the 17th December, and Michael Bublé will be the musical guest promoting his new Christmas album.

Speaking on Twitter, Jimmy said “I’m incredibly honored to be heading back to 8H where it all started. And by “it” I mean Will Ferrell’s awesome movie career”.

Fallon has made a few sketch appearances on SNL since leaving but nothing as big as his hosting gig this December.

BBC News reports Letterman “was presented with the Johnny Carson award for comedic excellence at the event in New York”. The award is the highest honour at the ceremony. Letterman was greeted with a standing ovation when he came up to collect the award. He stood in front of the original curtain from Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show to be presented with the honour.

Other awards went to Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live) for Best Comedy Actress In Television, former Saturday Night Live regular Tina Fey won for Best Comedy Actress In Film (Date Night) and The Daily Show With Jon Stewart won for Best Late-Night Comedy Series.

Elton will host and perform on the 2nd April edition of SNL, and Helen Mirren will host the following Saturday (9th April) with music provided by the Foo Fighters.

BBC News reports “Sir Elton last appeared on Saturday Night Live in 1982 when he performed Empty Garden and Chain in a show hosted by Johnny Cash”.

The same episode is repeated the following day – Sundays at 2.05pm.

This Saturday’s episode is from season 1 with guest host Elliott Gould with Leon Redbone, Harlan Collins and Joyce Everson.

The main host for that show will be actor Paul Rudd.

The now defunct NBC show is nominated for “Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series” against The Daily Show With Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, Saturday Night Live and Real Time With Bill Maher.

Conan tweeted “Congrats to my staff on 4 Emmy nominations. This bodes well for the future of The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien”.

Jay Leno spoke about the nominations for The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien on his show this week, saying “the big show business news is that the Emmy nominations were announced today… the good news: The Tonight Show got four nominations! The bad news: I didn’t get one of them… remember there’s no ‘me’ in Emmy”.

Saturday Night Live is also nominated in the “Guest Actress in a Comedy Series” category for Betty White and Tina Fey’s appearances on the show.

The former regular cast member of SNL will be back in April and it’s thought she might reprise her role as Sarah Palin, which brought her huge recognition throughout the US elections.

When asked about returning to SNL as the former Governor of Alaska she said “It’s inevitable that we’ll try it, at least… we’ll see if it makes it to air”.
