Saturday Night Live – The election’s nearly here

Presidential candidate John McCain made an appearance on Saturday Night Live last Saturday (1st November).

TV Guide’s review of the episode says “They wasted no time putting McCain to use, as he was joined by Tina as Palin (!) to make their last-minute plea to voters while hawking products on QVC. Apparently the campaign, as Tina points out, spent a little too much money on Palin’s clothes and couldn’t afford to match Sen. Obama’s three-network infomercial”.

Actor Ben Affleck was the guest host on the show and American Idol star David Cook performed.

There is a two hour special show tonight (3rd November) on the eve before the US Election. The two hour special is called the SNL Presidential Bash 2008 and special guests will make appearances on the show. The two hour special will air at 9/8c on Monday 3rd November on NBC.

John McCain’s return to the Late Show

Senator – and US President hopeful – John McCain came back to the Late Show With David Letterman on Thursday night. It was the first time he’s been back since he famously cancelled his last Late Show appearance a few weeks ago to, supposedly, run back to Washington to fix the economy – when he actually stayed and did an interview with Katie Couric for CBS News instead. John McCain told Letterman “I screwed up”.

Letterman made jokes about McCain on subsequent shows after he cancelled and showed how disappointed he was about it and originally said “This is not the John McCain I know”.

Thursday’s edition of the Late Show With David Letterman got the biggest audience figures since Oprah Winfrey’s appearance back in December 2005 according to CBS and E! Online. John McCain’s appearance on Thursday drew in approximately 6.5 million viewers (beating The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in the ratings, who had Joe Biden on).

CBS has been kind enough to upload the entire John McCain interview to their official YouTube channel, which is great news for us Brits who can no longer watch the Late Show on UK TV. Click here to watch the full interview.

John McCain is back on the Late Show this Thursday

Senator John McCain – running for President in this November’s US Election – will be coming back to the Late Show With David Letterman this Thursday. This will be the first time the senator has been on the Late Show since he infamously cancelled on his previous Letterman appearance a couple of weeks ago. David Letterman mentioned his frustration and annoyance that McCain cancelled publicly on his shows recently.

The excuse McCain gave for cancelling his last appearance was that he needed to rush back to Washington to fix the economy, when it turned out he was actually doing interviews with Katie Couric and didn’t leave for Washington until the next day. It’s not known whether he will bring Sarah Palin – his Vice President candidate – with him to the Late Show, but Dave has hinted that he would like them both to appear on the show together.

Thursday will mark John McCain’s 13th appearance on the Late Show With David Letterman.

McCain originally exclusively announced on Letterman’s show that he was running for President in the US Elections.

David Letterman rips into John McCain

Letterman has spoken out about John McCain cancelling his recent Late Show With David Letterman appearance even though McCain went ahead and did an interview with Katie Couric for CBS News at the same time. Letterman said “I’m more than a little disappointed by his behavior… We’re suspending the campaign… suspending it because there’s an economic crisis, or because the poll numbers are sliding?… something about this stinks”.

Keith Olbermann replaced John McCain as a guest on the Late Show. McCain was supposed to be on his way to Washington for talks to resolve the credit crisis, but he was actually still in New York filming the CBS News interview. Throughout the interview Dave was watching McCain getting ready for the CBS News interview on the Ed Sullivan Theatre monitors during the show. At one point Dave shouted at the McCain on the TV monitor “You need a ride to the airport?”.

On the Late Show, Dave said “Senator John McCain, Republican candidate for President, was supposed to be on the program tonight. Were you aware of that? But he had to cancel the show because he’s suspending his campaign because the economy is exploding. You know who John McCain is… he’s the running mate of Sarah Palin”.

McCain originally announced he was running for President on the Late Show.

Barack Obama on the Late Show and SNL

Democrat Barack Obama appeared on the Late Show earlier this week ahead of the US Presidential elections in November. Obama spoke about his recent comments about putting lipstick on a pig (referring to the Republican’s election stance) when Letterman asked him if he had ever tried to actually put lipstick on a pig. Barack said he hadn’t “but I think it might be fun to try”. Senator Barack Obama’s appearance on the 10th September 2008 show was his 5th visit to the Late Show. Obama said “the policies of John McCain would be the pig”.

In other news, Barack Obama will also appear on Saturday Night Live this weekend – the first episode of the new season. AFP says “quite what the Democratic presidential hopeful will do on the program this time is still being worked out, the aides said, but it is a safe bet that the hosts will extract comedy value out of some of the recent campaign sparring”.
