The Colbert Report and The Daily Show streaming

There’s a website called iFilm, which offers free streaming of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report - and it works in the UK too. Our thanks go to one of our visitors for emailing us about this. The site is run by MTV Networks, so appears to be a legitimate way to watch The Colbert Report (and The Daily Show). Each show is provided in segments.

Late Show returns to UK TV, Podcasts

As reported here on Thursday the Late Show with David Letterman is to return to UK screens from the 1st of October.

Whilst this is very much to be confirmed with two months before the launch, Diva TV will air the show weeknights in a primetime slot, possibly 9pm. The show will be an hour long in duration and there will be a delay of around a fortnight from the US airing. Fans of Glaswegian Craig Ferguson will have to sit tight - the Late Late Show isn’t one of the CBS shows for which rights have been acquired.

Diva TV will be on Sky from launch in the Lifestyle and Culture section of the EPG, and we understand there may be discussions with Virgin Media in the future, although any launch on Virgin would likely be well into next year.

It sounds like the Late Show will get an enormous amount of respect from Diva TV and that they’re very pleased to be able to broadcast it. Sparrowhawk Media also operate The Hallmark Channel who are known for leaving shows like the Law & Order franchise intact with original titles and so on. There might be hope for fans of the New York skyline yet!

This will be great news for fans of the show - with a really good, regular time slot and a great channel hopefully this’ll give the show a chance to bed down and grow on viewers.

With the news of the return of the show to UK screens, the Late Show UK Podcast will be available from this weekend. We’ll be covering all the shows we cover on the blog and a new episode will be released every weekend.

Look out over the next few days for information on how to download and listen to the podcasts - it’s really very simple if you have iTunes or a similar program installed.

Former Late Late Show host Tom Snyder dies

Tom Snyder, a former host of the Late Late Show which follows the Late Show at 12.35am, has died aged 71.

Tom first gained fame presenting the Tomorrow Show on NBC in the 1970’s. Famous editions of the show include interviews with U2, Kiss, John Lennon (his final televised interview) and members of the Star Trek cast. The show also gave Weird Al Yankovic his network television debut. David Letterman and Billy Crystal also made a long appearance on the show.

Following the cancellation of the Tomorrow Show, Tom went on to work at a number of TV and radio stations including CNBC in the early 90’s. The gap that was created by the cancellation was filled with a new show - Late Night with David Letterman. When Letterman joined CBS in 1993 he was tasked with creating a show for the 12.35am slot, and having idolised Tom for some years selected him to host the Late Late Show in 1995.

The show was different from the Late Show and other late night talk shows. Tom had a history in news rather than comedy, possibly the reason for the show taking a more intimate one-on-one approach with interviews, which were also longer and more indepth. Tom Snyder left the Late Show in 1998, and Craig Kilborn took over having left The Daily Show.

There are many videos on YouTube featuring The Late Late Show and the Tomorrow Show. One of particular interest might be this one, which features a fascinating and amusing interview with David Letterman via a link from the Ed Sullivan Theatre. Speaking personally, it’s some of the funniest Letterman I’ve seen, and includes a clip at the start from that appearance with Billy Crystal on the Tomorrow Show. The interview took place the week after the London shows.

More Tonight Show Speculation

Listening to Cash Peters the other night on Five Live (you can listen again here), an interesting angle was discussed on NBC looking to retain Jay Leno. Once Conan O’Brien takes over the Tonight Show, if Jay Leno isn’t with NBC there’s nothing to stop him starting a show opposite Tonight on ABC or FOX.

Jimmy Fallon (mentioned in an article a few weeks ago) is again mentioned as a possible host. There’s some interesting news about whether Tonight may return to New York, and the mention of Saturday Night Live backs up what had already been discussed, considering Lorne Michaels involvement.

Jimmy Fallon has made various appearances on Late Night, the Tonight Show and had a part in The Secret Policeman’s Ball in 2006.
