Writers strike – The Tonight Show from 1990s next week

NBC have scheduled in some very old episodes of The Tonight Show With Jay Leno to show next week because of the ongoing US writers strike. All the shows next week are from the 1990s. Monday night’s show in the US was first broadcast on the 29th June 1992 and features appearances from Tom Hanks, Brian Ross and Delbert McClinton. Tuesday night’s show originally aired on the 16th December 1993 with guests Julia Roberts, Pierce Brosnan and Geechy Guy. Wednesday’s show first broadcast on the 26th January 2000 and features Matt Damon, Selma Blair and Third Eye Blind. Thursday’s programme comes from the 7th June 1995 with Jennifer Aniston (in her ‘Friends’ era), Peter Jacobsen, Anita Baker and James Ingram. The final show of the week on Friday first aired on the 13th April 1995 and the guests were Johnny Depp, David Hasselhoff (discussing Baywatch, no doubt) and George Wallace.

The other US chat shows will be airing some old reruns as well – but all of those first aired in 2007, so they aren’t that old. These reruns from the 1990s make a nice change – hopefully CNBC Europe will air them as normal on their channel for us British folk. Keep an eye on the CNBC page for The Tonight Show for upcoming schedules on there.

Writers strike – The Daily Show re-enactment

The writers of The Daily Show With Jon Stewart have been re-creating the programme out on the sidewalk in New York City in amongst the protest zone. Viacom bosses weren’t too pleased according to the Alternative Programming Department website. The actual show put on by the writers on the street was pretty clever though – a video of which is below.

Dave to feature on Howard Stern Special

David Letterman is to be interviewed for an upcoming special of The Howard Stern Show on Sirius radio. This is very rare – Dave rarely gives interviews and isn’t usually seen out and about on other shows other than the Late Show. Although, Dave has been a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show this year, and has also dropped in on Regis Philbin on Live With Regis And Kelly following Regis’ recovery from heart bypass surgery (something Letterman went through himself a few years ago). The Howard Stern Show special will be a life story of Howard Stern’s career. The New York Post website says the first part of the special radio programme will air on the 17th December “on one of Stern’s two Sirius radio channels”. The New York Post reveals the radio special “is expected to feature interviews with a slew of Stern regulars and celebrity friends. Among them is Letterman, who, outside of his own show, rarely grants interviews”. Letterman used to be quite a regular guest on Howard’s various radio shows, and Stern has appeared on the Late Show many times in recent years.

Writers strike – The Daily Show – More 4

You may have noticed The Daily Show With Jon Stewart reruns are no longer airing on More 4. This is just because of the WGA writers strike in the US – I assume More 4 feel the repeat airings would not attract as many viewers as new shows, so they have scheduled other programming in the 8.30pm slot weeknights. The Daily Show is expected to return to the channel when the WGA writers strike ends – we have no reason to believe otherwise.

Richard Simmons and the Late Show

In a recent interview with Chron.com, the always hilarious Richard Simmons was asked why he keeps going on the Late Show after being the subject of many a joke on the programme. Richard answers “After I went on the show, 200,000 people went to my Web site and wrote e-mails to (Sen.) Ted Kennedy and (Rep.) George Miller to get P.E. back in the school system. That’s the power of the David Letterman Show”. To see what we mean when we say ‘hilarious’ – check out this;

Writers strike – Chat shows coming back early December?

The latest reports suggest the producers for the major US chat shows – the Late Show With David Letterman, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and Late Night With Conan O’Brien – are in talks to bring back the shows from early December. An article on Variety says “according to several network execs with knowledge of the situation, there’s been talk of resuming production on some shows as early as next month, with Dec. 3 and Dec. 10 mentioned as possible return dates”. It’s still certainly not 100% known what will be happening – for example, the latest data available to us for listings for next week, shows new episodes of The Tonight Show and Late Night With Conan O’Brien (possibly with guest hosts instead of Jay and Conan), but nobody knows for sure. Variety also reports “so far, ratings for the latenight shows haven’t been dramatically hurt by the strike — but there are signs of erosion”.

Update – 17th November – 22:00 – The latest data we have now suggests there will be reruns next week for The Tonight Show and Late Night (and all the other chat shows). Keep checking www.lateshowuk.com/guest-listings for any developments.[/end of update]

A Worldwide Pants spokesman for the Late Show and Late Late Show told Variety “next week’s tapings of ‘The Late Show’ and ‘The Late, Late Show’ have been canceled, and we will continue to make a week-by-week determination about future tapings”. Silicon Alley Insider says “NBC, which owns the Leno and O’Brien shows, has told the staffs of those two shows that they will be paid at least for the next two weeks”. David Letterman has already said he will continue to pay his staff some form of payment throughout the strike. The Daily Show With Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report are likely to stay in reruns for the forseeable future.
