You may have noticed The Daily Show With Jon Stewart reruns are no longer airing on More 4. This is just because of the WGA writers strike in the US - I assume More 4 feel the repeat airings would not attract as many viewers as new shows, so they have scheduled other programming in the 8.30pm slot weeknights. The Daily Show is expected to return to the channel when the WGA writers strike ends - we have no reason to believe otherwise.

In a recent interview with Chron.com, the always hilarious Richard Simmons was asked why he keeps going on the Late Show after being the subject of many a joke on the programme. Richard answers “After I went on the show, 200,000 people went to my Web site and wrote e-mails to (Sen.) Ted Kennedy and (Rep.) George Miller to get P.E. back in the school system. That’s the power of the David Letterman Show”. To see what we mean when we say ‘hilarious’ - check out this;

The latest reports suggest the producers for the major US chat shows - the Late Show With David Letterman, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno and Late Night With Conan O’Brien - are in talks to bring back the shows from early December. An article on Variety says “according to several network execs with knowledge of the situation, there’s been talk of resuming production on some shows as early as next month, with Dec. 3 and Dec. 10 mentioned as possible return dates”. It’s still certainly not 100% known what will be happening - for example, the latest data available to us for listings for next week, shows new episodes of The Tonight Show and Late Night With Conan O’Brien (possibly with guest hosts instead of Jay and Conan), but nobody knows for sure. Variety also reports “so far, ratings for the latenight shows haven’t been dramatically hurt by the strike — but there are signs of erosion”.
Update - 17th November - 22:00 - The latest data we have now suggests there will be reruns next week for The Tonight Show and Late Night (and all the other chat shows). Keep checking www.lateshowuk.com/guest-listings for any developments.[/end of update]
A Worldwide Pants spokesman for the Late Show and Late Late Show told Variety “next week’s tapings of ‘The Late Show’ and ‘The Late, Late Show’ have been canceled, and we will continue to make a week-by-week determination about future tapings”. Silicon Alley Insider says “NBC, which owns the Leno and O’Brien shows, has told the staffs of those two shows that they will be paid at least for the next two weeks”. David Letterman has already said he will continue to pay his staff some form of payment throughout the strike. The Daily Show With Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report are likely to stay in reruns for the forseeable future.

New episodes of The Tonight Show could be broadcast next week - but without Jay Leno. Jay is refusing to cross the picket lines and this has resulted in reruns airing in the late night slot on NBC. However, according to reports, from next week (19th November) NBC are seriously considering bringing the show back but with guest hosts. Watch this space.

The writers for the Late Show With David Letterman - including Bill Scheft, Gerard Mulligan and Bob Borden - have set up a blog featuring their thoughts on the strike, and some pictures taken on the picket lines. LateShowWritersOnStrike.com has photos of Gerard Mulligan, Barbara Gaines, Pat Farmer - and Rupert Jee (from the Hello Deli) has been helping out. There’s a nice recipe for “WGA strike cookies” on the site. Late Show writer Matt Roberts is pictured handing out leaflets and flyers and says “hopefully the strike won’t last long enough for me to get good at this”. There are some pretty good photos on there - go and check it out at www.lateshowwritersonstrike.com. The site reminds us “there is a lot at stake with this strike and these are serious issues. The Late Show writers are on the picket lines every day they are scheduled. We are not making light of this situation. One way to get people to pay attention to the strike and its issues is through humor”. Thanks to ‘Tommy_tank’ over on the Digital Spy thread for pointing us in the direction of the site.

In Jay Leno’s latest Times column, he speaks out on the WGA writers strike. Written on Sunday, he said “I don’t see myself crossing the picket line. Let’s see how long this thing lasts. I have a situation where if I stay out long enough the people on my show will be laid off. The studio’s not going to continue to pay them a salary when there is no work to do. We don’t really know what’s going to happen. Monday was the first day and everybody’s marching with bravado, but we’ll see what happens”. All late night US talk shows stay in reruns until further notice. Jay also says, in his Times column, he “went down on my motorcycle, delivering doughnuts to the writers”. The BBC News website has a photo of him at the picket line (go to photo 3 on that page for the picture of Jay).

Jimmy Fallon’s preparations for Late NightTom: I never liked Fallon when he was on SNL (.), so I’ve always been sceptical about how well he will handle Late Night. However, he seems to be doing quite a bit of preperation, so only time will tell… Oh yeah, maybe someone should...

Are BBC personalities such as Jonathan Ross overpaid?P JAMES: The vast majority of people to whom I have spoken regarding this poor excuse for a “personal ity” take the view, as I do, that he is grossly overpaid. It would appear that the BBC is desperate to attract younger viewers -...
