Writers strike - Dave and Jay losing £500,000 a week?

According to showbiz news website Showbiz Spy, the WGA writers strike is “costing talk show kings David Letterman and Jay Leno half-a-million dollars each a week”. Dave and Jay usually get around $500,000 from their networks (CBS for the Late Show and NBC for The Tonight Show). The Late Show gets its network payment to Worldwide Pants (Letterman’s production company that produces the Late Show and the Late Late Show) and The Tonight Show gets its network payment directly to Jay. Showbiz Spy says “Leno last week stopped receiving his $520,000 weekly salary, according to production sources”. Letterman’s yearly salary is reported as being over $30 million. The writers strike continues.

Second thoughts for Jay?

Is Jay Leno having second thoughts about his planned 2009 retirement from The Tonight Show? An article on The Star Online eCentral states “Leno has said he is comfortable with his planned departure but, according to a report earlier this month in the Los Angeles Times, the comedian has grown reluctant to retire as host of the top-rated, late-night programme”. Conan O’Brien is thought to be a certainty to takeover The Tonight Show from 2009.

Writers strike - Reruns continue next week

Due to the WGA writers strike, all the main chat shows will remain in reruns for a second week. The Associated Press states CBS and NBC are planning to air reruns (as they did for this week) for the whole of next week - although NBC’s position isn’t completely clear as the AP says Leno and Conan are on reruns for this Monday, but “the network didn’t disclose its plans for the remainder of the week”. ABC also only gave Monday’s plans for Jimmy Kimmel Live (which will be a rerun).
