Late Night With Seth Meyers premiered on NBC last night, from Studio 8G at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York just across the hall from his old Saturday Night Live residence.
The show started with a “Thank You Note” to former Late Night host Jimmy Fallon – a segment that used to be on his programme:
After which, the titles rolled in a video sequence similar to Saturday Night Live’s opening and not dissimilar to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’s titles, which tapes just a stones throw away.
Seth’s former SNL colleague Amy Poehler, US Vice President Joe Biden and A Great Big World were his first guests for this opening show.
Seth’s debut was met with somewhat indifferent reviews by some – The Los Angeles Times reports he “struck a decidedly low-key note in a broadcast that emphasized finely tuned punch lines over star power and razzle-dazzle” and overall it was an “understated affair”.
However, Entertainment Weekly was more complimentary saying “The good bits of his Late Night premiere offer some hope: The flat-tire story, the Poehler interview, the fact that he managed to wring some funny blood-from-the-stone jokes out of NBC’s mandate that all late-night hosts must make a million jokes about the Olympics”.
They also noted “Late Night with Seth Meyers feels like a work in progress. But at times, it also feels like progress… an old-fashioned tone… proudly analog in late night’s digital era”.
The Daily Beast thought the premiere episode of Late Night “wasn’t boring… but he still has a long way to go before he fits in on late night”.
Thanks so much for watching tonight! Remember, you can say you were there at the beginning. #LNSM
