As many of you may be aware, a brand new channel launches tomorrow called TruTV.
TruTV is owned by Turner Broadcasting – the broadcaster behind TBS which airs Conan O’Brien’s ‘Conan’ talk show in the US.
‘Conan’ will air on TruTV Mondays-Thursdays at 11pm – the first time the show has been broadcast on UK TV.
So, I thought why not try my luck at TruTV’s Twitter hashtag competition last week, where you had to tell them why you deserve to go to their launch party in London:

I thought nothing would come of it, but sure enough I got a DM back on Twitter telling me I had won and would be attending the TruTV launch party in London on Thursday night (31st July), which Conan himself would be making an appearance at. I jumped at the chance and secured my place.

I was allowed a ‘plus one’ so what better person to take than co-owner of this very website James Burrage.
We were let into the event around 7pm and enjoyed some of the frankly unbelievably good food and drink on offer – canapés and, later on, a rather substantial hog roast. As you may have guessed the whole evening was ‘redneck’ themed – all of the staff I saw at the event were in character. There were some very interesting games/themes on the night, including a bucking bronco for people to try out, a tattoo parlour, arm wrestling and you could even try your hand at trying to sell something at the Hardcore Pawn shop.
Conan was speaking at the event so we made our way near to the front of the stage, and he came out just before 8pm.
He spoke for around 10 minutes about the new channel and how he loved the programmes they were going to be airing (one of which being his).
He also said how he thought British comedy set the benchmark for all other comedy – speaking about his love of Monty Python and Blackadder.
After the speech he made his way around to the back of the stage near to the entrance door.
We made our way to the same area where we found Conan doing some interviews and waited patiently in hope of a quick chat.
James got his Late Night With Conan O’Brien Finland DVD signed by Jeff Ross and Conan:
After a little while I got to speak to Conan. We shook hands and I asked him if he would do a week of shows in London. He said he’d love to and they’d have to get something arranged. After our brief chat he kindly had a photo with me.
Me with Conan O’Brien:
Conan definitely came across the way he does in interviews – very down-to-earth, funny and an all-round nice guy.
He stayed around for a little while longer joking with people and having photos taken then made his way outside to be whisked off in his car.
So, one of my ambitions realised – to meet the man himself. What a great night!
TruTV launches tomorrow on Freeview channel 68, Freesat channel 154 and Sky channel 565.
