David Letterman and Paul Shaffer on Regis’s Late Late Show

David Letterman and Paul Shaffer on Regis’s Late Late Show

David Letterman and Paul Shaffer stopped by the Late Late Show last night (Tuesday), which was guest-hosted by their good friend Regis Philbin.

The Late Late Show was broadcast from New York for Regis’s episodes which was just as well considering the snowfall in the US this week would have made it very difficult for Dave to get to the Late Late Show’s usual home in Los Angeles.

Dave and Paul discussed their time together on late night TV at NBC and CBS now that Dave’s retirement is coming up in a few short months. They spoke about how Shaffer was recommended to Dave to become band leader at NBC after they saw his work on Saturday Night Live and how they’re like “the odd couple”.

Other guests on Tuesday night’s show were Charlie Rose, Donald Trump, CBS sportscaster Tracy Wolfson and Counting Crows providing the music at the end of the programme.

It was a bit of a strange format to the usual Late Late Show as there wasn’t an audience other than a few select members of the production team (and Tracy Wolfson’s dad).

Letterman’s interview itself was slightly odd – particularly his comments about upcoming Late Late Show host James Corden where he asked why he hasn’t showed up yet and referred to him as the “chubby” kid. Whether this was in jest or otherwise it made for a bit of an awkward interview.

  1. This has been completely taken out of context by the press. If you skip to around 17 minutes in he’s giving it the usual Letterman shtick. I’ll admit it’s slightly harsh at points, but it’s just a joke.
