Jimmy Kimmel Live will move to an earlier timeslot on ABC next year.
From January the programme will air at 11:35 instead of its current midnight slot – putting it in direct competition with the Late Show With David Letterman and The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.
Nightline will be shunted from its 11:35 home to air at 12:35 after Jimmy Kimmel Live is broadcast.
Jimmy Kimmel is celebrating his tenth year hosting the ABC talk show.
Anne Sweeney – president of the Disney/ABC Television Group – said in a statement “given the passionate fan base ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’ has built over the past decade and the show’s ratings and creative momentum this season, the time is right to make this move… there is the potential for far greater upside over the long term with this shift, given increased advertiser demand for competitive entertainment programming in the time slot”.
Jimmy Kimmel’s deal with ABC has also been extended – his contract was due to run out in February 2013 but he’s now been renewed through 2015.
