Writers strike – ‘Tonight Show’ staff lose jobs

The WGA writers strike continues. Staff on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno have been told they have lost their jobs and may not be rehired when the show returns. Jay had said last months the workers on his show wouldn’t have to worry about their jobs and that he would promise their pay, etc would be safe. The Hollywood Reporter website states “insiders say Leno’s actions have destroyed morale at the show and in the process dented the host’s previously squeaky-clean reputation as one of television’s A-list nice guys”. NBC had been talking about staffing lay-offs for some time. NBC have told the staff of The Tonight Show they will be contacted if their services are required.

The article on The Hollywood Reporter website also suggests NBC have looked into the idea of having new Tonight Show episodes without the writers and either relying on standup comedians & longer guest segments with Jay as the host – or another option considered was “using rock stars on a rotating basis”. The Tonight Show – as well as all the major US chat shows – remain in reruns for the forseeable future.
