It’s been announced today the Late Show With Stephen Colbert will make its debut on CBS on Tuesday 8th September at 11.35pm ET.
Chairman of CBS Entertainment, Nina Tassler, says in a CBS press statement “the production office is open, the premiere date is set, and we’re incredibly excited to welcome the creative and comedic genius of Stephen Colbert to CBS late night this fall”.
Stephen Colbert said “I have nine months to make a show, just like a baby. So first, I should find out how you make a baby”.
David Letterman will leave the Late Show on Wednesday 20th May so it’s quite a big gap between Letterman’s final show and Colbert’s premiere.
As the new iteration of the Late Show will still come from the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York it’s thought the big gap is to allow for a full renovation & set redressing, and to allow Stephen & his team to work on ideas for the show.
Stephen will be bringing some of his team from Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report with him to CBS, alongside new staff, and it looks like there will still be a Late Show band:

To fill the void between Dave leaving and Stephen starting CBS will take the radical step of airing reruns of its primetime shows in the Late Show timeslot instead of airing reruns of Letterman’s Late Show.
